Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

New Brazing Torch Uses Plain Water as Fuel

Pathfinder Tags: brazing fuel Torch Water

A European consortium has come up with a new brazing torch that reduces operation costs and increases user safety by eliminating the use of dangerous propane, oxygen and acetylene tanks. The new SafeFlame brazing torch can be used for HVAC, automotive, ship building and jewelry manufacture applications and is powered by water, separated into its two elements, to deliver a consistent flame that can be used for a multitude of brazing applications. Another safety feature is that the torch head remains cool to the touch.

The water is separated when subjected to 230 volts of electricity by an electrolyzer stack that in turn feeds the separated gases to the torch head. Read about this new brazing method on Hemmings.

What exactly is the new part or concept here?

This type of "water torch" system has been around for about 100 years now.

My Ex made jewelry with such a torch in the '70s. It was quite expensive to purchase....

The major difference here just seems to be the amount of gas and the pressure its delivered at.....

Still quite interesting though....

Torch head remains cool to the touch? Where did the discoloration come from?

Plain water? How about flame control?

Agreed, this seems like a lot of gimmick.

...and any over-unity loony can use it to run their car on water!

A company called Multiplaz™ has had this on the market in US for several years. It can also be used to weld and plasma cut. It is highly portable and I borrowed a demonstration set from the suppliers to do a one off job high up on some difficult to access pipework. For small power work I found it very useful, but the high capital cost was hard to justify and so I did not purchase the equipment at the time. I have been monitoring the price move down slowly with the idea of buying a set to sculpt with when I retire. If competitors have now joined the market perhaps the price will fall more rapidly.

"The water is separated when subjected to 230 volts of electricity by an electrolyzer stack that in turn feeds the separated gases to the torch head."

I doubt it somehow. Each electrolyzer cell only requires about 1.5 volts to effect electrolysis of water, so this corresponds to about 153 cells in series. Now why would you do that? All you need is one big cell, low voltage and big current. Far simpler.

I concur with tcmtech, this is old tech with a new twist. I was surprised that they can generate 2800C vs oxy acetylene torch's 2500C. I am certain the BTU factor is much lower, breaking an acetylene triple bond releases a huge amount of energy. However, gas is real cheap and I am not a safety freak. I will not buy an electric car because I fear the gas tank will explode.

I would like to see this technology in electronic cars. As you charge the battery you also create fuel.

The temperature of combustion does not necessarily correspond with the amount of heat released. There are chemical reactions that have a larger enthalpy change ( e.g oxidation of Al at -1,670 kJ/mole) than acetylene (-226.73 kJ/mole) but occur at lower temperatures. The temperature of burning H2 in O2 appears to be about 3,200C, but acetylene in O2 varies from 2,700C to 3,480C (a big difference!), according to source. More research needed!

This is not browns gas, but hydrogen and oxygen flame...nothing unique. The torch and tips available at your welding supply, again nothing unique, I've use a split flame head for surface hardening of track, again nothing unique. The multiplate hydrolyzer to run at higher voltage, also common with magnetic separation of the generated gas, a common technique. What's unusual is the thought that this most likely overpriced system might be marketable and that Hemmings would help.
