Water Meters Reach Emerald Isle

Posted January 30, 2014 12:00 PM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

In Ireland, water has always been like air - free. But that's slated to change in early 2015, when the first water bills go out to Irish households. And by the end of 2016, the country plans to install more than a million water meters. National Geographic has the story of Ireland's new water policy, which is meant to encourage conservation and help fund water infrastructure improvements.

I'm currently living in Ireland. If there's one thing we are not short of - it's water. It rains massively here on the west coast, pretty well every day. Fortunately we run off a borehole which produces clear water with no taste - so no water bills for us - ever.

Just saw SolarEagle's links to a newspaper - Killorglin is near here. So nice not to be dependent on a utility for services. Needless to say, even here, money and profits for "the boys" rears it's hideous head.

See this week's Caption This. Lets just hope those million meters aren't calibrated in kWh.

Ahh, boyou, there goes the neighborhood. Next thing it will be like life in the states.

Hey ya'll that's joke, son. Even if your water comes from a well, you still must provide the energy to lift it, do you not?
