Robot Creates Beautiful Light Paintings

Posted February 03, 2014 12:48 PM

From IEEE Spectrum Recent Content:

I don't know exactly who was the first person to figure out that robots could be used for long-exposure light painting (although it may have been the guy linked to from here), but it's something that I've dabbled in for science, as have many others. It's a great way of making art, too, and it's relatively easy to do with a minimal amount of hardware and programming knowledge. Thymio II shows us how.

Interesting, but it is not really art…

At least in my opinion.

This was done handheld, which gives it a more organic structure, but the hand controller has both a microcontroller to control the lamp color and intensity as well as a position sensor to allow color pattern generation through the stroke (pattern generator not used in this shot).

This shot was taken under full moonlight with an exposure of approximately 5 minutes using a high resolution camera.

Mixing technology with art, in my opinion - again, is harder because it is too easy to let the technology get in the way of the creative photography. I think a lot of light painting ends up like that and it's appeal is soon forgotten as it lacks an emotional message.

Years ago , mid 70s, i developed xray art. I was working in NDT at Boeing Marine and was interested in B/W photography. Sold prints thru Homes and Gardens. Never got off the ground. Major seller was prints of a 45 caliber automatic pistol , shot with Ir 192, sold thru guns and ammo mag.

Maybe i was too ahead of the times because i lost $ in the business. I am not an artist more of a technical type. I should have worked with an artist and just provide the technical end.

I think that was a great idea. Sorry it never took off.
