Why Does White Noise Help People Sleep?

Posted February 18, 2014 3:35 PM

From Popular Science:

On its face, flipping on white noise before hitting the sack must be the most counterintuitive idea out there. Want to sleep better? Simple solution: make a bunch of noise. Sweet dreams ahoy. And yet, not only do some people swear they can't get to sleep without a fan running, there are even companies that will sell you optimized noise-makers for helping you get the best of your bed rest. What is up with our brains and our ears? The short answer: white noise is better noise. At least for (some) sleepers.

Hmmmmm.....

and just a week or two ago, Dr. Oz explained how pink noise is better for good sound sleep than white noise:

. . .

I feel an experiment coming on...

It drowns out the voices.

I prefer a quiet radio when I sleep, the voices in my head are too busy singing along to order me to do things.

Well --- at that link I posted above, I downloaded the

Sleep-and-noise-sounds-for-iOS...

... plugged my iPhone into my Bose sound dock beside my bed...

... and ...

the pink noise certainly did exceptionally well! For the first night, even seems to have controlled the very functions of nature, so to speak... (first night that I can remember, not having to get up to at least dispose of my glass of red wine!)

More nights of experiment on their way.

"Surprising" to me, that it took this thread to prompt me to give it a go!

Cheers~

"night 2" - played the wht noise.

Awoke @ 2:10 ("out with the wine")...

Woke again @ 4:00 dreaming vividly that I was hearing my alarm!

... otherwise, "ok"...

Firmly believing that alternating sounds each night is not going to be good, I am going to continue next several nights with white noise, to see if there's a pattern, before switching back to pink noise.

Anybody else having a speaker dock for their 'device', check out the app (link above), and feel free to join in the experiment here...(!) Not expecting to post any further results for probably five or six nights here... unless something "extraordinary" to report.

~~~ Sleep Well ~~~ !
? Nobody else chiming-in...?
Well : 6 nights of white noise versus 6 nights of pink noise, and I have to say:
White sounds something on the order of a mild rain on a plastic tent roof, while pink sounds more like heavy rain on a shingle roof, with Niagara Falls a short distance away.
And, while BOTH do a good job of helping to bring-on the sleep (always aided by valerian root and red wine :: NO more melatonin!)... the pink DOES, quite honestly, help to MAINTAIN the sound-sleep "noticably better".
Anybody have access to a 'sleep disorders test lab'...? Would love to see the 'brain activity' results of white-vs-pink on numerous subjects.
"To be Continued..."
I'm reading along.
I used to get by on very little sleep, and have napped in the tumbling room at a ball bearing plant, and slept directly over one of the main propeller shafts on a Navy destroyer.
Noise has never really been an issue one way or the other, but I've found that as I've aged, sleep is one of my best friends. I'm asleep between 8:30 and 9 PM, and awake around 4:30 AM, every day.
I would like to do some work on lucid dreaming, which sounds really cool.
l u c i d _ d r e a m i n g . . .
I *know* for a fact that I have experienced such dream-state (at least twice. Years apart).
NOW , you have me wondering whether some "properly timed", subliminally introduced sounds ("in between" pink noise / white noise) might be capable of bringing-about dreams ('in general') / lucid dreams...(!?!)
Anybody know of a good-&-cheap mp3 editor/stitcher...?
.....
Probably better be careful...
Wasn't lucid dreaming what brought-about "Inception"...?
Yeah. I've had a few. I don't know about Inception, but it looks like a good movie.
I fly/float around on a pretty regular basis, but lack control over where I'm going. I think a lucid dream state could make it a lot more fun.
Flying/floating dreams, I envy you, man. Deep down, you've got a pretty carefree life, or rather you're so on top of things that the cares don't weigh you down.
Nah, trying to escape usually translates to 'trapped'/'chased' dreams.
Yeah. I was kidding; they're pretty cool.
I wish I had more of them, and had more control over where I'm going. To get started, I just fall forward from a standing position.
