Gumpert Explosion Extracts 420 Horses From Just 2.0 Liters

Posted March 04, 2014 12:46 PM

From Autoblog:

Gumpert momentarily went under a couple of years ago, but now it's back with new investors and a new product that aims to correct that historical wrong. Inexplicably, it's called the Explosion, and it just debuted here at the Geneva Motor Show.

Anybody can take a 2 liter engine with turbo boost cranked up to 20 psi....Mustang has a 2.5 liter engine with turbo putting out 305hp for 2015....The ever popular 5.0 puts out 420 hp with 390ftlb torque....Looks similar...

Yes, it may put out 420 hp but for how long and at what expense?

Must have an impressive RPM red line to get that much power out of 2 litres.

But yeh, longevity may be an issue...

Well we're talking ex Audi Quattro engineers. The old Audi Quattro is pretty legendary. Audi_Quattro WIKI. Audi was showing another concept of a potential new Audi Quattro model in Geneva this week as well check it out here. It'll be interesting to see what kind of price point it drops in at, but a TT-S runs in at about 50,000. 150,000 is still nuts, I'm with you.

I've liked the current gen mustang and I really like the refresh for 15. I wouldn't want to disrespect the history and heritage or mustang but alter it from RWD, but I think it would be neat if they released an all wheel drive version.

Due to a lack of "performance" AWD driver cars, the options are all overpriced and hold their value really well. My favorite example is the super ugly 2015 WRX starting at 27k. They ditch my favorite design from them- that being the 5 door hatch- to update the body on sedan in the most ugly way possible. Fail. I'd spend my 27k on a used carerra4 and call it a day.
