Innovative Food Wrappings To Reduce Browning And Increase Vegetable Shelf Life

Posted July 09, 2007 11:29 AM

From ScienceDaily Headlines:

More than ever, today's markets are calling for fresher and less processed food products. In the vegetable sector, where items are quite perishable, innovative food packaging technologies can extend shelf life while maintaining a low level of pre-sale manipulation. Researchers are developing innovative food wrappings that will reduce browning and increase the shelf life of perishable vegetable products. Partners in the EUROAGRI+ GREENTEC project are working to improve the conservation of consumer-friendly vegetables. José Burnay at EUROAGRI+ GREENTEC coordinator Campotec explains. "We are looking at edible wrappings, combined with new techniques for processing under modified atmospheres. The goal is reduced browning and extended shelf life for mixed pre-cut vegetables." The packaging sector is an important global industry, representing about 2% of the gross national product of the developed countries. The value of the packaging industry is about 345 million euro worldwide and forecasts suggest the sector will continue to grow in size and importance.

As a mom of three growing children I found that when I would buy produce before we could consume it the produce would go bad. Dosent surprise me seeing as how everything goes bad before you can eat it nowdays. Even if I would juice the produce it did not taste as fresh as the day I brought it home. I researched the reason and found that there is device that works in your refrigerator that will help prolong the shelf life of organic produce plus it kills bacteria. It is the best thing I have ever owned and I think everyone should own one. I found it at www.orderminimate.com its called the Mini Mate.I have had mine for over 60 days and it has already saved me $20.00 which is a fraction of what I paid for it. Has anyone else use this before ?

According to she who must be obeyed, this, or something very like it, has been on sale on QVC for some time now.
