Can You Tell the Monet From the Microscopic Imitation?

Posted July 02, 2014 10:17 AM

From Gizmodo:

One of these is Claude Monet's famous painting "Impression, Sunrise." The other is a replica, constructed using an aluminum nanostructure, measuring around 300 microns in width. But can you tell which is the real deal?

Neither one looks correct....but certainly the one on the left is closer, the one on the right has no sole....

Here's a quality reproduction....

......undoubtedly. I have a few 'original prints' of stuff on my walls.

Like the film says, "Mo' Monet'

Just for the sake of going phillosophical; There are some amazing art fakers about. What should it matter if nobody can tell the difference from the original ? A painting is either good or it isn't. Art has become an investment commodity.

Good art has a price ceiling, with no provenance or pedigree, that's as high as it will ever go, the price you probably paid when you bought it....If you're an art lover, this is what you buy....If you're an investor, you buy provenance and pedigree because of the collectibility of the piece....If you're an art lover who collects for investment purposes, then you buy art you love that is "highly collectible"....I have a number of copies, bronze statues, oil paintings....

I'm sure if I could examine the two side by side in person, I could pick out the original.

Wonder if they have any Vermeers in 500 nm. My flat is a bit cramped.

Whilst I'm here, where should I put the Louvre? It doesn't look good in the salt shaker.

Please advise.
