Assuming the automotive industry remains a major user of metal
materials, its priorities will inevitably continue to determine those of
many metals manufacturing companies. Right now, the 'lightweighting' of
vehicles in response to increasing fuel economy targets is high on the
list. So, as The Fabricator reports, a lot more use is likely to be made of hot stamping,
also known as press hardening, in which boron steel blanks are heated
to above 90 C before being pressed into shape and then rapidly cooled - a
technique that produces exceptionally strong but lightweight
components. But in turn, metals companies will need to be familiar with
the specific equipment requirements including frame styles, guiding,
speed of operation and quick die-change that hot stamping demands.
