Also in the article the author explains - in the same breath no less - that *mass* spectrometers sort atoms by *weight.*

(goes outside and bangs head on nearest immovable object)

This is precisely why I eschew common terminology when I write about technical topics. Laymen will more often than not misunderstand my intended meaning. I do this particularly when my reputation may be impacted.

This article seems to be in accord with the latest trend in tech/sci reporting: "dumb it down for the rest of them." That and the preponderance of technically/scientifically illiterate authors (and their editors) staffing the tech rags of today. Gone are the days when publishers assumed a priori that their audiences were at least as educated as they were.

On the flip side, maybe they still do.
