How Children's Brains Memorize Math Facts

Posted August 18, 2014 11:41 AM

From Latest Science News -- ScienceDaily:

As children learn basic arithmetic, they gradually switch from solving problems by counting on their fingers to pulling facts from memory. The shift comes more easily for some kids than for others, but no one knows why. Now, new brain-imaging research gives the first evidence drawn from a longitudinal study to explain how the brain reorganizes itself as children learn math facts.

Not any more!

With the adoption of Common Core, knowing the answer is to be scorned.

If the child can't draw boxes or bow ties, using countless mindless steps to arrive at some feel good conclusion that may, or may not, be correct they surely will not succeed in life.

Think I'm kidding? Just sit through a 4th grade math introduction to the "Common Core" way of doing it.

Or, ask my daughter who is a school teacher. She hates Common Core!

I'm serious. Knowing the answer will only get you in trouble if you are in a Common Core state.

I must have worked at a few common core based businesses before being that when ever I came up with the correct answer to a problem we were facing all sorts of stuff hit my fan so to speak.

In third grade, we were expected to know the 12 x 12 times table forwards and backwards. We had timed quizzes that could only be completed if you had memorized the table. That and only that was the objective of third grade math. Fourth grade was long division and fractions, and so on.

Fast-forward to my kids in Maryland (pre-Common Core). My youngest of four just graduated high school last year. None of my kids had to memorize the times tables. Correspondingly, they are horrible at computing much of anything in their heads. They seem amazed that I can compute gas mileage, sales tax, tips, etc. without resorting to paper, calculator, or finger and toes.

It is so sad the educators in this country have dumbed-down the curriculum with a whole lot of useless garbage (try to teach problem solving without the basics ) and have almost completely ignored the Three R's. Educators also seem to be obsessed with college. What a load of CR4P. Not everyone is cut out for college and not everyone wants to take their education that route. As such, the educational programs are geared for college prep and does a huge disservice to the many kids like my son, who are very bright, but do not learn in the traditional collegiate fashion.

He has amazing (almost scary) retention, very detail oriented, very observant, but just cannot learn by sitting in a classroom listening to someone drone on, or by sitting down and digesting a book. He learns by observing and doing. It was hell getting him through the school system here. From the third grade on, the clueless teachers all seem to want to get him drugged up save the precious few teachers who have actually RAISED boys themselves. Young, female teachers are very poorly prepared to work with boys. They have no clue unless they happen to have been raised in a 'boy' kind of household.

I think we will have to hit rock bottom before the powers that be pull their collective heads out of their rears and get back to the basics that made us so powerful before.

I agree completely.

Education has deteriorated to the point of uselessness.

"Our" 15 YO had to sign his adoption papers at the county juvenile court office, because he is over 12. The lawyer was surprised that he could actually sign, and not print, his name. I fear his little brothers will never learn to write.

That speaks volumes about modern educational expectations.

Out 4th grader is a "math master". He gets awards for it every quarter.

College ready? Who are they kidding?

A deficiency in the basics seems increasingly common.

.

Many people cannot 'calculate' a 15% tip in their head, even have confidence they might get reasonably close.

.

If my at checkout in a store, the cashier rings up $3.77, when I provide a five and two pennies, the most common reaction seems to be utter confusion with little or no hope of recovery without help from a me or a machine.

.

The ability to determine the total for a couple items including 7 1/2% sales tax without resorting to pen and paper or machine seems for many to pass easily for incomprehensible shadowy sorcery.

.

Stores commonly mislead customers with incorrect per weight or per item prices for items on store shelves with no notable backlash.

In Texas if the number goes over 10 then we have to take off our shoe.

Common Core is a good example why government experts are not the answer. I wasn't present, but I think the steps from education development research to Common Core goes something like this:

"We need to recognize that not all students learn the same way, so when one or a few students are struggling, we need to show those students another way to approach the problem. That way all students can learn techniques that fit their abilities."

Add some bureaucratic magic:

"All students must learn all methods of solving a problem and be able to explain in detail how each method works. That way all students will be forced to experience frustration."

I couldn't open the link posted. I found this story. Is it reporting on the same study?

Still can't open the link. Our security program identifies this as a "DNS Black Hole site", whatever that means, and forbids us access to it.

Once upon a time, knowledge/wisdom equaled survival.

That is no longer the case, and learning, (in the US), has become folly. Only victims are guaranteed a free pass. Producers are thieves.

That education in this country has been systematically gutted to its very core is no accident. History repeatedly shows that the more un/mis-educated the masses, the easier they are to lead by the nose down the Garden Path and, ultimately, to the slaughter.
