What's Driving the Next Packaging Trend?

Brand owners are accustomed to tracking consumer attitudes toward packaging features - from easy-open packs to portion-size containers - to keep in step with demand. But staying ahead of the curve sometimes requires understanding the drivers that will create or influence the next trend. This article from Packaging World identifies eight global developments that may affect packaging over the next few years. Among them are traditional drivers such as laws and regulations, and consumer desires for safety and convenience. But others are new to the scene, such as digital technologies that create more and quicker connections with consumers.

I liked the entire article here, but what struck me most was the statistics about "Emerging Markets"...Growth of the middle-class will have a profound effect on more than just packaging trends. Next five years will be interesting I'm sure!

"Notes Ehret, these fast-growth economies include not only the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), which are expected to grow to more than 1 billion middle-class consumers in five years, but also the "Next Eleven" (N-11) nations-Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey, South Korea, and Vietnam-estimated to grow to 2 billion middle-class consumers in the same time frame."
