Growing OSHA Enforcement Makes Electrical Training for All a Must

Posted October 09, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Typically, a trained electrician is the one mitigating a facility's electrical hazards, but this doesn't mean that other workers are out of harm's way. Standards from OSHA and NFPA dictate that non-electrical professionals be trained in electrical safety practices as well. An inclusive training program should address safety related to 120 V flexible cords and plug-connected devices, as this common voltage is responsible for the highest number of electrical-related injuries. What's more, extension cords used for temporary power during maintenance and repair must feature ground fault circuit interrupters. Learn about other considerations for a plant-wide electrical safety plan.

Lord knows I hate it when the government involves itself in everything!

But Darwinism being what it is these days this is probably not a bad idea (shudders at the thought).

Having been working in the manufacturing industry for a lotta years the stupidity I've seen is immeasurable.

Course that being said I ain't perfect either.

It would be best if you are going to quote OHSA regulation that you get your info directly from OHSA.

The use of ground fault on temporary electrical systems pertains to construction industry. This means the temporary system be ground fault. Not all the extension cords in use. Only those extension cords that are exiting a building be ground fault for regular maintenance work. Or if there are other environment issues where water is involved.

ozzb are you sure that that standard is current . As of last month I went through a refresher course on safety training to work on a local teaching hospital. And was amazed that the standards were drastically changed for extension cords. All had to be grounded as has been the standard as long as I have been in the field. But they now require that they (extension cords or triple taps) all have ground fault interrupters on every cord. And all triple taps require a (fuse/circuit breaker) for any over amperage situations or water infiltrations, indoors or out.

Precisely the point why one should cite the relevant code (1910.304(b)(3)(ii)(A)) instead of hearsay.
