Sky Rise Over Miami

Posted October 24, 2014 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

From out on the ocean, the new Sky Rise Miami might appear to be a giant water-slide made of glistening steel and glass. But what will soon be the city's tallest tower when it's completed in 2017 is actually meant to resemble a wave or even a giant game fish that's breaking the water's surface as it snatches a fisherman's bait. Said to be constructed in part of a single massive sheet of mesh that extends one thousand feet up into the blue Atlantic sky, the LEED Gold Standard tower will house nightclubs, restaurants, exhibition spaces, and even a bungee jumping platform.

I like unique architecture, but sometimes a design looks quirky just for the purposes of being quirky. Those designs, including this one, are best left in the CAD file.

If they build this, I'll be anxious to see how it holds up to a Cat 5 hurricane.

That would be a bitch for a skydiver to land on.
