Man Made Island Up For Sale

Posted July 18, 2007 10:54 AM

From Spluch:

A Victorian sea fort off the coast of Portsmouth is on the market for £4 million ($8.1 million). No Man's Land Fort, a mile from the mainland, was originally built to house nearly 80 soldiers to fend off an attack from the French navy. More than a century later, it has spent its recent life as a luxury hotel complete with 21 sumptuous themed rooms, two helipads and heated indoor swimming pool. Now after the previous owner has been jailed and his company collapsed, the fort is once again on the market. Rachel Halliday, spokeswoman for administrators KPMG, said: "We are letting people express an interest in the property before we invite offers for it, but it's expected to fetch up to £4 million. Built between 1861 and 1880 it needed a huge engineering effort to cut vast blocks of granite and transport them by barge to the building site, before they were lowered onto the sea bed for its foundations.

Wow, that's even cooler than the Principality of Sealand.

Yes, you could live there comfortably...I wonder what the previous owner was gaoled for?

The price is just for the Freehold. One would still be protected by the British authorities, as the structure is inside territorial waters and this probably defines its nationality.

Sealand is outside British territorial waters, so Nationality comes along with the Freehold. As far as protection goes, you're on your own unless you can set up a protection treaty with a friendly national power. As the British government declines to accept Sealand as a country, on the basis that it is a man-made structure, it's all a bit nebulous and risky.

What a licenced conveyancer would make of it all remains to be seen!

If only I had the cash for something like that ! Very cool. Napoleonic Martello Towers swap hands fairly frequently (must be problems fitting the furniture). Several are very near to where I live, and they are fascinating to look at. If I remember I'll try and get a couple of pictures at the weekend. Personally I'd go for a small Island in the middle of a remote Scottish Loch.

The weather has been a bit lousy over here, so this will have to do for now. It's not likely to be on the market as it sits on the edge of a military firing range (!). This one is blocked-up to keep people out, and it appears to be capped (most likely for preservation). It's not as remote as a Sea-fort, but I think the walls would be pretty secure. For military history fans the South coast has masses of interesting places to see, like the 'listening-ears'. I only recently heard of 'geocaching' and was amazed that even American groups run trails over here. Just mentioned that because I was innocently soaking up sun on a military emplacement near Dungeness (a remote area)recently and a family group asked if I'd mind moving for a minute (to find a cache). Small world.
