CR4 Highlights from 2014 & Plans for 2015

Posted December 29, 2014 12:00 AM

I can't believe another year is drawing to a close. So many things happened in 2014 that I wanted to take a moment to highlight them before we move on to 2015.

1,000,000th Comment

We hit our one millionth comment back in February. CR4 wouldn't be the same without all who participate, and this was an incredible milestone that roughly coincided with our 10th birthday.

So, what were the hot topics to generate that much discussion? Let's take a look. (Note that these threads were chosen based on number of comments or views, not the quality of the discussion!)

Engineering360 Launched

GlobalSpec, CR4, and more merged together to create a great new site called Engineering360. It's full of news, analysis, references, supplier catalogs, and more. Editor David Wagman is going to be sharing some insights with you via the new Editor's Desk blog.

Posting Timeout Error Resolved

Somewhere along the way we resolved the posting timeout error that was so frustrating to many people. There's little worse than typing a long reply only to have it disappear before your eyes. I felt the pain on this one, too!

Plans for 2015

There are obviously more improvements to be made to CR4. Here are a few on my agenda for 2015:

  • Fix the text editor so that it's fully functional across widely used browsers. (I know a lot of you are unable to post pictures, and this is included here.)
  • Improve the logon process so that you'll be able to comment on Engineering360 posts with your CR4 identity. This will eliminate the need to register for a Livefyre account.
  • Some of your suggestions on bugs to fix and new features you'd like to see.

So, what do you think? Share your thoughts on 2014 and what you'd like to see in 2015.

Fun to read.

I'd commend people to read stuff by Del (nope, he isn't paying me - cheepskate), Lyn, Tornado, PWSlack, and about 50 other people. Regular participants will get to know the people who don't post often but know stuff inside out. There is scarce a topic that I could not find a cR4 expert on. I'll not tell, but I think I now know an expert in every field of knowkledge. The great thing is, anyone can post a quetion to CR4 and one of these folk will arrive.

We had a similar last year (or was it year before) ?

Some great stuff, but I'm slightly biased.

It's not fair of me, but you could mention the all-time worst/best, even if it had to be hidden and 'archived'. As embarrassing as it may be to CR4/GS/IHS it did give some fun to people for a time. C'mon, it was a ridiculous giggle for a time.

Just visiting after a few years... in fact surprised to see the take-over. And that thread with approx few thousand posts has disappeared.. the pre-historic iron bath tub breaking thing.. when there was a squirrel lurking around.. now it seems there is a break-room for those but that break room direction arrow is not pointed in the conference hall. It was very educative personally to be there then. After that the usual other business and lack of time caused the dissociation. The main interest binding this was the galaxy of knowledge (persons) who were there. This forum not only makes one to dig out old memories, but also forces one to think in addition to learning new things.

That thread seems to have disappeared completely in the cloud? Or can it be revived in the breakroom?

'Archived' was the chosen description, though 'bricked up in the cellar' might be closer. Chunks of it lurk in google caches.

Anyways, it's nice to see an old face back around here.

Good.

Congrats Fredskie #1, such a year ender award. The anon who was second should have been known, but I like his topic anyway "Are you a terrorist (but didn't know it)"

And the third topic sounds like "attack of the killer tomatoes" tv series.

Congrats as well to others who are not mentioned. Next time CR4 will throw a red carpet party. just kidding. Who knows?

I would greatly (and gratefully) appreciate a word search facility for use within one's Private Messages.
