A Border Patrol Automated and Armed

Posted July 21, 2007 6:00 AM

Robot sentries that detect intruders, raise an alarm, and even provide suppressive fire are being considered for use along South Korea's border. "Intelligent Surveillance and Guard Robots" use visible and IR sensors to distinguish humans up to 4 km away, as this video demonstrates. When the target is within range, the robot demands a code; failure to respond initiates action. With modifications, these automated border patrols could guard airports, power stations, and critical pipelines.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Robotics Systems, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Robotics Systems today.

Immigration should use these on the Tex-Mex or California border.

I second that, except the guns should be knock out gas and then tag them with a micro chip like my dog, but with gps. this way when they try to come back we will catch the whole flock, learn their new hot spots for getting over, and tag every one we catch.

"Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free..."

Another early imigrant...happy to stop everyone else, whist doubtless happy to use cheap labour?...and I thought the Brits were s'posed to be the whingers?

JasBond,

I agree completely with your comment especially the gangs, here in California they are almost unmanageable. There are areas where you would not dare to take your family -- even in broad daylight. I would love to see very aggressive action to protect our borders. And very strict requirements for allowing anyone to come here. Especially the ability to communicate. I should not have to learn a second language to accommodate immigrants. It should be required that any one coming here, especially to get citizenship status, be able to speak English -- (It really doesn't matter - UK English or American English)

Yesterday an accused rapist had all the charges dropped here because we could not find an interpretor to assist in his defense. He may have been not guilty BUT we will never know and he is back on the street. This was based on the "Speedy Trial" requirement which I agree with. If all incoming folks were required to speak our language to reside in the USA this would never be an issue again.

Del,

The O's are surely a minor issue in light of the serious nature of this particular topic. I think everyone knows about to, too, and (too) two. Come on Del you can offer more than that to the conversation. I see on the news every day that the UK has similar problems and their solutions are just as difficult to come by as ours are.

English?

Why English? Native American language isn't English..... Many of the original imigrants spoke German, Spanish?

I know you think I am trivialising...but I feel you are muddling the issues.

The rapist story ... he may not be guilty or an illegal immigrant...and what about the wealthy white collar guy with an expensive lawyer who gets off raping the Philipino maid? That wouldn't even get into the news......

There is always another viewpoint.

I have no personal axe to grind...but people always seem to go for the easy target.

I'm just trying to encourage some perspective....

It must be obvious that trying to control illegal immigration is not an easy task or "target" or it would have been controlled by now. Twelve million illegal immigrants are not helpless people being trod upon they are breaking our laws and should be treated as any other criminal.

Yes -- German, Polish, Chinese, etc etc were all spoken but the successful business/ economic growth was due to a predominant common language. I think German was being considered to be made the official language here (not really sure about that). Special consideration was not given, ballots were not printed in multiple languages, special classes were not given in public schools. Second languages were taught in high school as elective classes.

Unfortunately we cannot go back to the 1700s 1800s or even any past time - at least not yet. If we could we would have several tribal dialects and the country could never have grown to the level it has. We could all speak Comanche, Arapaho, Pima, etc etc if things had not gone the way they did. Possibly if the tribes had united and could understand each other they could have defeated the European influx of immigrants at that time. Who knows we cant live in the past, we can only recognise and learn from it.

I am surprised that I even need to explain that the predominant language in the US at this time in history is American English. In order to communicate in this part of the world it is necessary to be able to speak to the folks around you.

A common language is part of the reason the US has had very few tribal wars in recent history - and also part of the reason that the US has been quite successful in growing to it's present state. Although, I do believe that the US is on a downward spiral and expect us to reach a third world status within 20 years.

Our own government does not support internal growth unless you are a corporate monster. Our technical and highly skilled jobs are being outsourced by the same corporations that have benefited from the past American skills and innovation. Europe has benefited by American involvement in past decades, as a matter of fact where ever America has been, although with many problems, the countries have improved their quality of life and economic structure. This has taken many years for those countries -- I suspect the same may come to pass for Iraq and Afghanistan. Who knows.

America is a Great country that has made SIGNIFICANT contributions and sacrifices to the rest of the world. I only hope that this country does not fail. Talk about world chaos.

America is just another country it has good points like medicine R and D and Tech but it also has bad points. The reason the U.S. is so hated is it wasteful, war munger society, it has been involved in every war that you can put on the map dating back to the 1800's.

I fear what the U.S might do to hold onto it losing the top dog position when China or India says enough who knows it might be Russia that say a enough !

One last thought you couldn't let North korea or Saddam or Iran have a nuke for the fear they might use it but the reality is the U.S. is the one that has used it !!!

The American way of life is take it by force you did it to the Indians(native) you did it to the Mexicans you did it to he Brittish. Your idea of peace is "it got to be you way or we will kill you" like I said you have good points and bad like all countries but you are far from staying top dog when china wakes we all be learning chinesse.

I really wasn't trying to change the subject to the unfairness of the legal system -- only an example of a problem with a multi linqual society. We are not even equipped to deal with it. Please see the bolded part of my comment below from a previous post.

Yeh, I'm not anti-border control ...it's just #2 and #3 seem rather Draconian measures! And the tar 'em all with the same brush' streotyping seems a tad intollerant.

Yes #2 and #3 offended me also --- these are truly folks who need to put some thought into their comments. If you noticed they are GUESTs -- very often, not always it is the guest who is very offensive or critical. After all they have nothing to risk as they have no identity here.

To be serious.

What percentage of would be immigrants want to come in for the oportunity to do a fair day's work for a fair day's pay to support their families?

How much of your view is real or just a media slant?

In UK there are plenty of people moaning about imigrants, but without them the health service, building and food industries would be crippled...

Do you know who moans the loudest? It's the people wo are on the dole themselves and not willing to work.

Now I'm in danger of getting sucked into generalisations!

The published figures back up my case that it's not the imigrants who are unemployed...mind ..who believes the figures!!

Anyhow..it's been a fair enough discussion so I expect someone will object and get it censored!!

Cheers

Del

I must apologise if I appear to be an unintelligent person who only repeats what he hears on the TV -- Actually I have given this much thought and see that a fair way must be found. It still does not change the fact that if current laws are being broken then criminal activities are taking place. Either change the laws or deal with the criminals.

Anyhow..it's been a fair enough discussion so I expect someone will object and get it censored!!

I sincerely hope no one has been offended by this thread -- I don't think either of us intended to be offensive to anyone.

If the current laws are enforced and the people are here legally there is no problem from anyone I know. We all are subject to the laws of America here --- illegals are no exception. I agree with "MR GUEST" as applied to illegals. I believe that is what he meant.

Furthermore your opinion is important - I can understand your opinion, but remember you don't have to pay the cost of the illegal immigration here. Illegals get benefits for which they never contributed a dime. Let them come, but under the same laws that the "EARLY IMMIGRANTS were subject to.

Thank you for listening

Re: A Border Patrol Automated and Armed

Very true..

But I do contribute to the cost of illegal immigration in the UK...!

I wasn't aware that they got much in the way of benefit in the USA.

I thought they were just exploited as cheap labour? No free health care in US?

I just get fed up in the UK where the tabloid press target 'Illegal immigrants' as the source of all our ills and claim they defraud us out of millions... In reality they may get a small amount of benefit which they are not entitled to...however this pales into insignificance compared to the millions which is defrauded from the state in terms of tax evasion or direct fraud by big business buying up companies and spending the pension fund and similar pranks...

The imigrants are a soft easilly visible target, mostly doing jobs which the regular workforce won't do often in unsafe or underpaid conditions.

Thank you for listening

Illegals here are neither soft or highly visible. The economic impact is huge. Security issues in this day and age are a very serious concern as they are or should be in the UK.

Illegals are provided medical help and cannot be turned away legally if they need medical care. We the tax payer get stuck with the cost. Crime and drugs are also a major concern that goes along with illegal immigrants here. I would suspect that the same is true in the UK.

Not to mention that if a child is born in the US to illegals the child is automatically a citizen. It is somewhat unkind to separate a child from its parents -- so how do you deport the illegal. You just do it and then you are the bad guy. The child cannot be deported, but the parents of course would take the child with them.

There are so many issues connected with this topic --- it's huge.

The big business, taxes, and corporate issues that you speak of are very serious and concerning here also. But it a totally separate issue from Illegal immigration although just as costly -- maybe? more so?

It is a lot of money for nothing time and time again it is proven that automated technology (still in its infancy) is much too limited to be entrusted with such an important job. When it comes down to the line the actual units and the support system can be outwitted by some savvy problem solvers. I certainly don't want my tax money wasted on such a farse.

It's for their own good

09/15/2007 8:08 AM

Since most people here are engineers I will offer a slightly different angle on the subject and since most of the posts were more political than technical I will join in the fray in like manner. Keeping illegal immigrants out of the country is good for them, because people who cannot be tracked are vulnerable to the criminal elements of our society here in America. Companies without a conscience can literally use these people to death and then dispose of them when they die from the harsh chemicals to which they are exposed. Or imagine some of these people being lured in by the promise of $work and then being farmed for their organs. Law enforcement is usually helpless to protect these John/Jane Does. We have chosen to live in a complex society where freedom has become a myth and where privacy is fast becoming a word in the dictionary there solely for its historic value.

On language let me make a few more enemies. According to Berlitz ( yeah you know the language guy) 2/3 of the world speaks Espanola so maybe we are being arrogant to think we should require all that enter this country to know English when they arrive. If immigrants from Mexico can't even get a Mexican education how should we expect them to cross the border speaking and spelling some of the fine English we have seen glossing these hallowed electronic pages?

Even though I strongly believe in mastering a language of a country before visiting it it is mostly for my own selfish reasons IE. Getting the most out of my tourist dollars than for being kind to the natives, and I have many sources of study available to me to help in that regard.

Bring it on guys/gals let's hash out these ideas.
