Small Modular Reactors Progressing, but Not in U.S.

Posted January 07, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Small modular reactors (SMRs) by definition generate 300 MW or less, and are factory built and tested for field installation. Their modular nature reduces the time and cost of construction, installation, and startup. SMRs are classified into three designs: light water, high-temperature gas-cooled, and liquid metal and gas-cooled. All typically include multiple features to "fail safely," even with the complete loss of power. While many other countries are moving ahead with SMR development, the U.S. is generally seen as lagging behind in the technology. Power Engineering explains.

We still kid ourselves about the full life cycle cost, safety, and, even, need for all forms of nuclear power generation. Rickover, the "father" of nuclear power ship propulsion, likely the most defensible use of thermonuclear power, toward the end of his life began to realize and advocate the elimination of nuclear power. SMR's are the beating of a dead horse.

They are wrong.

My forensic practice is largely sustained by clients who make what seem to wise decisions on much less than the universe of the set of metrics they should be using. These biologists see the see the same problems as the rest of us and are grasping for a key hole solution that is pure chimera.

Many times, to quote clients: "We never thought of that as a problem" or "We never looked into that aspect" or "But he (or she) was the expert whose advice we followed without looking further into any of his (or her) assumptions."

For all the sage advice of the Ten Commandments and like wisdom of the ages, I live by the laws of physics and one other: Murphy.

I, too, at a Florida beach, hoping to never be "on the Beach" with Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner.

It's shortsighted to think the advance of technological innovation will not solve the waste and other problems associated with nuclear based power generation....and the energy density is an ultimate destination...Those that point to the problems abandoned in the past as a naturally occurring time-line of events that are presumed accurate today, neglect the truth of political pressures that have sought to kill the golden goose and rendered the present state of the technology commensurate with a 30 year old Dodge truck....

Pandora's Promise is a great documentary.

I believe it is on Netflix

Comments from a class "A" welder involved in the construction of a nuclear power plant: "At first, every weld was inspected, but as work progressed, the weld inspection evolved into one of randomness. Timelines had to be met."

Same old story, but with heightened consequences.

A quote, with no source, citing possible criminal behavior, is hearsay evidence, and doesn't belong in this forum....

Hold on, here's the guy's name and address .......Not! Wether or not it belongs here can be administrated., otherwise is an individual opinion. This is a forum not a court of law. The quality control of construction methods can be documented.
