Japan Sets Up a Sustainable Smart Town

Posted January 28, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

A new community of 1,000 households on the outskirts of Tokyo, Japan, is designed to promote 'eco-conscious' lifestyles and produce 30% of its energy from renewable sources. Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town is being developed by a joint private-public consortium led by Panasonic Corp. Residents of 600 passively-designed detached homes featuring rooftop PV can choose between battery-based or fuel cell storage systems. Additional energy-conscious attributes cited in SolarEnergy.net include home energy management systems, solar roadway lighting, and a community solar power generation scheme to feed the town grid and provide emergency backup services.
