China Invests Billions to Grow Semiconductor Industry

Posted February 16, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

For the past 25 years, China has been struggling to become a recognized producer of semiconductor chips. But, it has not given up. In the latest initiative, the country is aiming to invest over $10 billion in domestic state-of-the-art semiconductor fabs, according to a report in EE Times. Besides boosting home-grown foundries, the investment is also expected to expand the country's fabless design sector.

"For the past 25 years, China has been struggling to become a recognized producer of semiconductor chips."

Well, it is certainly recognized for its counterfeit chips.

Given the huge negative publicity of counterfeit chips coming out of China it would seem that a large chunk of those funds will be needed to counter that image.

$10 billion you say? So given the billion plus population in China everyones tossing like 50 cents a year for the next few years to help improve their image?

So what if they import a bunch of those kids from Cambodia that can eat for a month on 50 cents and have them do the work?

Too much of stretch on that one?
