Wind Energy – Cost-effective Renewable Energy Solution

Posted March 08, 2015 12:00 AM by sanasyed24

Wind is a form of energy that is caused by the rotation of earth, irregularities of the earth's surface, and uneven atmosphere heating by the sun. Wind energy is used to generate electricity by the use of wind turbine. In history, wind mills were used to generate mechanical power from wind energy. Today, wind turbine is a modern equivalent of wind mill that converts the kinetic energy in wind into renewable electricity.

How a Wind Turbine Generates Electricity

A wind turbine is mounted 100 feet or more above the ground on a tower to capture most of the energy of less turbulent and faster wind. It usually consists of three blades around a rotor. The blade operates like an airplane wing creating a combination of lift and drag causing the rotor connected to the shaft spin. The shaft spins a generator to create electricity. Rotation of the rotor is increased by a series of gear that allows generator to produce electricity. Apart from gears, generator and rotor, turbine controller is another main component that controls rotor speeds to avoid damage by high winds. Controller receives wind speed data from an anemometer.

Benefits and Drawbacks

Primarily, wind energy is a free and renewable resource whose supply will remain the same even in future. Wind plants provide clean and non-polluting electricity and do not emit greenhouse gases or air pollutants, unlike conventional power plants. Conversely, the wind power technology requires high initial investment for machinery and installation, but the costs compared to other generating technologies are minimal requiring no fuel and minimum operating expenses. Apart from the relatively lesser environmental impact, there is a concern of the noise produced and the birds being killed by the rotors. Wind is intermittent and is not always blowing that is one of the major problems of using it as a source of power. Also, it cannot be stored and harnessed in times of electricity demands. However, wind turbines can be located in remote locations on grazing or farming land where there are good wind sites.

Applications of Wind Turbine

Wind turbines offer versatility in applications ranging from stand-alone applications to integrated system applications. Wind turbine can be connected with a photovoltaic solar cell or a utility power grid. Usually, a large number of wind turbines are built close to each other to generate more power. Generally, stand-alone wind turbines are used for communication or water pumping and also by home owners and farmers in windy areas.

We own a summer home in Hendricks, Minnesota on the northern edge of the Buffalo Ridge Wind Farm.

I'm always fascinated by the turbines and drive south, through the wind farm on the way to the big city of Brooking, SD when we're there.

The relative cost of wind power makes it an attractive source of power in many places.

Just started working on rebuilding my wind generator yesterday!

Two reasons.

1: When it works I get free electricity.

2: Usually when I have a wind generator up the wind won't blow hard enough to move a feather down a steep hill.

The number of bat deaths are astonishing, and are one of our most efficient insect removal devices (Mosquitos especially). They cannot adjust their radar to rotating blades, for as soon as they get one tracked, it disappears, and another target takes it's place. Bats do not walk--They fly at high speed, and piles of them have been found below wind turbines in some areas. Same with the raptors, such as ospreys, eagles, and hawks. It makes sense, that in order to have this industry mature, they must do what commercial fishermen have had to do, find and target valued species, and remove them from danger. We need to make ways for bats, raptors, and other birds etc, to be non- involved with the wind farm. What? --Sound (high or low freqs, signals around the farm? ) I don't know. But , realistically, for EVERY technology , there are one or more problems, that need to solved in order to allow that technology to flourish and that is why Engineers are so important. Start.

Some dead birds might belong to protected or endangered species. Govt/state should pass legislation to provide netting around the wind turbines similar to belt/coupling guards for rotating machines.

I wonder if it would be possible to somehow apply piezoelectric effect to eliminate the churning blades. Perhaps long pieces of piezoelectric material supported in the corners and allowed to just flap in the wind.

There has got to be a way of making this source of power a little more environmental friendly.

I think there is room for a thread for brainstorming alternative methods of producing wind power.

Well said. While the number of avian and bat fatalities from wind energy is probably not large, it is still an unnecessary and costly loss that is far to often ignored in the "wind is great" promotions. A mesh cowling like what many oscillator fans have to protect fingers from might block too much wind.

Since they are cost-effective, I can only assume now that none of our tax dollars will be required to erect them.

GA Brave Sir Robin.

That isn't the case though.

Wind is free but the rest of the network needed to harness and deliver the costly power generated is not.

Go nuclear! It is the cheapest per kw/hr power there is.

"Go nuclear! It is the cheapest per kw/hr power there is." ----- not in your wildest dreams.

The only way the industry survives is through taxpayer support. Huge amounts of money are currently being paid out of the DOJ Judgment fund to finance the handling of SNF. It is the only way the industry can compete. It would be impossible to sell a business plan to investors without the taxpayer picking up the tab for SNF and end of life plant high level waste.

The only way we can sell the technology to the third world is to take back the spent fuel at tax payer expense.

It's a loser; get over it and get on with finding sustainable alternatives.

Well I put mine up and no tax dollars were used.

Also stopped the wind too! Dead calm right which is really rare around here especially since the local forecasts are saying we should be at the 10 - 15 MPH range at the moment.

Kind of thinking I might put together a undershot paddle wheel power generator in my steam. Good chance we would never get a flood with high enough water for it to ever work again!

I was also thinking about solar panels but I really don't want to be responsible for the sun going out.

Ever since I put a snow blower in my garage, the most snow we ever got here where I live in Maryland has been about four inches. I was able to use a push broom to sweep it off to the side.

My wife likes the snow. She keeps telling me we HAVE to get rid of it.

Will the air movement resulting from rotating blades drive away rain clouds and accelerate climate change?.

I believe clouds are formed through the process of vertical convection. The base of the cloud is at the dew point temperature. The drier the air the higher the cloud base.

I don't believe there would be concern regarding wind energy recovery systems impacting cloud formation on a measurable scale.

Horizontal Wind energy recovery translates the kinetic energy of the moving air to mechanical energy where as the vertical displacement of air associated with precipitation is driven largely by latent heat released as the water vapor phases to rain. This is a huge amount of energy by the way. If my arithmetic is correct it equates to about 2.23 million Joule per liter of water condensed.
