Air Force One Upgrade

Posted April 19, 2015 12:00 AM by joeymac

It's looking like the Air Force is going to give Air Force One an upgrade. The Air Force currently uses the Boeing 747-200 aircraft as Air Force One. There are currently two of these aircraft being used as Air Force One and these two planes are the only ones left in the United States that are still flying. These 25-year-old aircraft are getting older, and the Air Force believes it's now time for an upgrade with a new generation of planes. The Air Force claims that it costs more time and money to keep the current aircraft flying, which is another reason they believe it's time for an upgrade: saved money in the long run.

The Air Force announced that it wants to use Boeing's 747-8 airframe. This long range, wide body aircraft is made in Everett, Washington. It has a longer fuselage, greater wing span and new engines and avionics. These planes will be heavily modified with the latest technology and security equipment. The military's request to Congress this year alone was for $102 million and may jump up to $3 billion in total in the next five years, and this is not counting the final three years of the project. The Air Force is planning on buying up to three of these airplanes. This depends on the ability of having two airplanes available for the president at any one time. The Air Force is hoping to sign the first contract with Boeing later on this year with the goal of having the new 747s flying the President eight years from now in 2023.

There are a couple of things that make me wonder if this is necessary. The article says that by changing the type of plane being used will save more money in the long run than the cost to buy and upgrade the new planes. If that's the case where are the numbers backing that up? How much money is being saved by changing planes? Another position is that the aircraft are 25 years old but they don't have nearly as many hours logged on them than commercial use aircraft. Realistically how many more years of service can we get out of the existing Air Force One aircraft? These are some questions that I'd like to see get answered before we, the American taxpayers have to pay for more government spending.

Maybe the USAF and C-in-C should obey the "sequestration" mandate(s) and keep "...driving it/them until the wheels fall off..." like everybody ELSE has been made to do?

This is ridiculous!

How can two airplanes cost $5 to 6 billion, or more, and take 8-10 years to put into service?

And who says the support team will be reduced from 100 to 20 again? I don't believe that either.

B-52's have a service life of 35,000 flight hours.

Some 747-200 are still flying after 100,000 flight hours.

Personally I think that the president and most every government official should be required to take public transportation.

I bet after one trip across the US in a buss they would be spending billions on road and related infrastructure repair and upgrades instead of new aircraft for themselves.

Plus by having to travel public transportation they would get first hand exposure to the real average American people which would likely also result in vast improvement in how they act and run our country.

Personally, I thing that every member of Congress should be term limited to two terms, just like POTUS is.

They all campaign incessantly so we would not know the difference, except for less bribery, maybe.

Now if you think either of these things will come to pass, I can get you some cheap land on the moon.

No thanks. Why would I want some land on a moon when I am already master of my own reality.

Seems a little extravagant given the current economic climate. Other things are screaming for that money...

But hey....some of our mates and family members will have proper jobs and training out of it....so that's good.

Security and safety are probably part of the concerns and naturally the anti missile systems for these aircraft are probably also a sizable part of the cost.....its still safer per mile to fly than drive on roads....any roads.

Not forgetting the time factor for driving.

As well as having to shut down a road system (as they did to Frankfurt when President Bush visited Germany some years ago), causing major jams and delays for the local people.....

Also, remember, airframes weaken over the years due to flying very high and cabin pressure changes...though Boeing are quite good in that area it would seem.

Whether or not a majority in the USA feel that the next incumbent will be worth this huge amount of money, probably will rely on who they voted for, as obviously Obarma will be long gone when it happens.....

Political opinions of today will be of little help in deciding either way, but I can imagine that Boeing may eventually have problems with spares for 25 year old aircraft (like having to go to Arizona to take something off a parked aircraft maybe?)

Best of luck either way.....

I can't understand why they would want to go bigger. It would be important to be able to put down in more places in the event of a problem. A bigger plane will have a limited number of airfields that it can land on. But hey! i don't give a rats. Just hope our P.M. is onboard when the shit hits the big fan.

The USAF could extend the lifespan of the aircraft by POTUS going on less Vacations and political fundraising events on the Taxpayer backs.

Yeah right......Goofy Golf anyone? Fore!!!!!!

We'd need to go back farther to get to the REAL truth.

Bush's vacations costly - Midland Daily News

The problem is that W. wasn't thrifty. He was the most expensive vacation president in US history. Not only did Bush spend more days on vacation than any other president, but he used Air Force One more often while on vacation than any other president.

During Bush's two terms, the cost of operating Air Force One ranged from $56,800 to $68,000 an hour. Bush used Air Force One 77 times to go to his ranch in Crawford, TX. Using the low end cost of $56,800, Media Matters calculated that each trip to Crawford cost taxpayers $259,687 each time, and $20 million total for Bush's ranch flights.

And you're basing your LibTard argument on that Lefty-leaning Trash Rag "Media Matters"? They've been proven time and again to be highly bias. Need I say more? SMH

Let's just say, for argument sake, that G.W. Bush did have those vacations OVER an 8 year period. By contrast, Emperor Barry the Tyrannical, has almost surpassed the travel volume, but with incurred costs much more higher then Bush's, all within 6.25 years. That says a whole hell of a lot... And then there was the all-expense paid vacation of Africa, where spending Taxpayer's funds was no object. That one alone Fries my Rice Krispies.

And how about jetting his dog to Martha's Vineyard on a C-17 Globemaster III two summer's ago? What, the damn dog isn't good enough to fly on Air Farce One with the rest of Regime? That boner really cost the Taxpayers Big time.

BRAHAHAHHAHAHHAHHAHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! That's all I'm going to say on this matter, other than to say what a stack of Baloney....

At the very least, I think AF-1 should be equipped with at least one ejection lounge.
