One-minute Battery Could Rival Lithium-ion

Posted May 06, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

A high-performance alternative to lithium-ion batteries, which last for about 1,000 cycles, withstands more than 7,500 cycles without any loss of capacity. The prototype aluminum-ion battery from Stanford University, CA, also boasts an ultra-fast charging time of under a minute. A graphite cathode and the use of Al instead of Li as anode material significantly slashes material costs, according to IHS Engineering360, and eliminates the flammability risk associated with Li. Possible applications considered for the long cycle life battery include consumer electronics and grid-scale storage.

I'm having just a little trouble with a battery that lasts for about 1,000 cycles but will withstand more than 7,500 cycle without loss of capacity. Could it be that the author meant "last for about 10,000 cycles, . . . " ??

Never mind that most of these psuedo-press releases from colleges and universities are thinly veiled pleas for more money.

Lithium ion batteries typically last for about ~1000 cycles...The new aluminum ion batteries last for ~7500 cycles.....and their is some minimal loss of capacity in both over time...

That has to be cycle numbers with a full depth of discharge. If it wasn't then regenerative braking would be causing any car hybrid to to require new batteries almost every year.

Well in general this would be complete charge to complete discharge as a cycle, however some companies(apple) consider it as half discharge to fully charged condition as the cycle to more accurately reflect actual usage characteristics....so the definition does vary, but does tend to be roughly equivalent....

The good news is aluminum is a whole lot more plentiful than lithium.

I don't see that the 1 minute recharge time is practical. If you estimate the electric car energy consumption at 0.5 kWh/mile (I think that is not far off), chargeing up for a 100 mile trip in 1 minute would require 50 kWh x 60 min/hr or 3MW (e.g. 1000V x 3000A). That's going to take some hefty wires.

Recharge stations will be easy to find...just look for the nuclear power plant chimney.
