As demand for underground and, especially, subsea wires grows, cable manufacturers are increasingly challenged with creating high-voltage cable that can withstand a huge number of environmental and human-made obstructions. Boat anchors, fishing vessels, and natural disasters, for example, can damage expensive power lines. The solution, say researchers on the project at the University of Southampton, UK, is cable insulated with thermoplastics to improve the cable's performance, lower the total cost of the network, and allow recycling once the cable is no longer usable.
