What Drones Mean for Power

Posted August 23, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Many U.S. utilities are turning to unmanned aerial drones to improve safety, lower costs, and hasten response times. By using drones, power crews can do their work faster, safer, and more efficiently. For example, a drone's onboard camera can relay an up-close look at a problem far faster than a bucket truck can. Transmission & Distribution World examines the trend of drones on the power grid in detail, including this photo gallery of Arizona Public Service's collaboration with Industrial Aerobotics, and an article about tests in Michigan. You can even see drones in action on power lines with this video.

I suspect there are many useful applications. (Agriculture and Search and Rescue come to mind.) They just don't get the headlines like the people who are up to mischief. (A story just isn't newsworthy if it doesn't elicit an emotional response.)

It's foolish to discard a useful tool just because some people misuse it.
