Internet Delivery Solar Drone Ready for Test Flight

Posted September 04, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Realizing that the World Wide Web isn't truly world-wide, engineers at social media giant Facebook plan to bring Internet service to remote regions via solar and laser technologies. The scheme hinges on Aquila, a carbon fiber solar-powered drone as wide as a Boeing 747 but lighter than a commercial aircraft. Hovering at 60,000-90,000 ft, the craft is expected to beam Internet signals to base stations, using new laser systems that transmit at up to 10 gigabits per seconds. Near-term testing will assess Aquila's ability to stay aloft for 90 days and service a 31 mile radius area.

The only detail I don't get is the "31 mile radius".

Yes that radius seemed a little meagre. Perhaps that's just for their testing I thik. You could do better from a quick deploy tower....

I would assume it can link to a ground station within a 31 mile radius from its location.

High altitude pseudo satellites is how these systems are being classified.

Good idea.
