Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

What Pre-Winter Projects are in Your Garage?

In Southwestern Vermont, summer has, rather abruptly, given way to early autumn. Some may lament the loss of warm temps and long hours of daylight, but not your humble author. Fall is my favorite time of year, and it also means that garage season is upon us. Finally, it's cool enough that wrenching on cars, trucks, motorcycles and power equipment does not involve being bathed in sweat, or attacked by the region's plentiful deer flies, a trade-off I'll gladly accept for shorter days.

Projects on the BMW R1100R have been stacking up over the summer, but I did finally get around to replacing the rear brake pads and changing the potentially decade-old brake fluid a few weeks back. That nasty task out of the way, I still need to change the front brake pads, which requires dropping the front wheel, since there isn't enough clearance to wrestle the caliper off the rotor with the wheel in place. That requires an assistant, since the rear needs to be compressed to create enough room for the front wheel to slide free, and with cooler temps I can probably con (er, I mean convince) my wife into helping.

What's taking up space in your garage?

We spent some time working on my car this weekend. Cleaned up some rust on the front brakes and looked for the source of a slow coolant leak. I also got new tires! Definitely have to get all of that in order before the snow flies.

I remove the beach umbrella. I use beaches on the the north side of the island, they're shaded by palm trees.

Other than that, it is a never ending task keeping the sand at the beach

On my Buick, I'll be putting new brake pads in the front, I put new ones in the back last spring and the front had about 3-4mm left.

Normally I would have put them in right away.... but, considering its easy to do I put it off till fall. Also putting in shocks.

and on my fall and into winter projects, On my '86 Porsche 911, I'll be pulling the dash out, and changing the bulbs (secondary) behind the dash because they are too yellowed and also replacing the cruise control board (primary) which is also behind the dash. I hate to get another ticket, and I have a heavy foot.

I also will be getting new skin on the targa top, that I'm having a professional upholster do it.

That is on the list, and that can change.

Hot and sweltering in Alabama this summer. I have exhaust system issues on my '99 Jeep Cherokee, so I'll spend some time under the Jeep and on cooler concrete. Also, I have designed and built a plasma ignition system that I will be installing and making new plug wires/boots for. Gasoline prices may be down, but for how long? Time to increase my gas mileage while I can.

Also, time to install my prototype heat system for front windshield/wipers. Not really useful here in Alabama winters, but very useful in most of the U. S. in winter. The design allows for some pretty cool improvements for winter driving: heated washer fluid that sprays evenly across the windshield, an ice-buster feature for the wipers, a feature that keeps the blades from warping and losing contact with the windshield, a feature that removes slush from the blades and wiper arm, and a feature that keeps the windshield de-iced even in sub-zero temps while driving in wind-driven snow.

Also, have to replace the timing belt in my wife's Volvo.

Putting the snow tires on. They are 20s so they have to be mounted. Could invest in another set of rims, but quite an expense.
