Teach Robots to Learn Like Children

Posted January 02, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Computer scientists, in collaboration with developmental psychologists at the University of Washington, have demonstrated that robots can learn much like children. Like infants, robots can gain knowledge through exploration, watching, and then determining how best to carry out specific tasks on their own. Learn how the UW researchers took the information they gathered about babies and used it todevelop machine learning algorithms that allow a robot to explore how its own actions result in different outcomes.

Does this seem more than just a bit creepy to anyone else?* "Colossus: The Forbin Project" -- among many others -- went down this road a half-century ago.

Watch out for the grey ooze!

*That it can be done doesn't mean that it should be done.

I taught my children to learn like children. They made lots of mistakes. Were mischievous to the point of being naughty. Fought like tomcats. Broke good china (by accident, they claimed). And drove me and their mother up the wall. I am not sure that teaching robots like this is a good idea.

Robots have a off switch that is legal for you to flip. Children don't.
