Virtual Assistants Get Smarter

It looks like 2016 will be the year of the chatbot. But don't look for repackaged versions of Siri and Cortana. The new generation of virtual assistants promises to raise the bar for natural language processing by dynamically, and sometimes proactively, interacting with the user. To show you what you can expect in upcoming speech interfaces, IHS Electronic360 looks at a conversational intelligence system that converts speech into a mathematical language, conceptualizes meaning, and dynamically generates output in a conversational tone (see video). The system - called Silvia - could well open the door for a broad range of applications.

It seems the important thing is to have access to a sizeable amount of "common knowledge". Humans communicate over a very narrow bandwidth channel to communicate a rather larger amount of information by having access to a common culture. The closer the humans are associated, the greater this data compression can be.

Spouses can transfer a thought with just a few words. And then, there is the old joke about prisoners who have heard all their fellow prisoners' jokes, so they just number them to save time.
