Out of Many Windows, 10 = 1

Posted January 09, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

Microsoft Windows has endured a long and at times bumpy road. Versions like Vista and Windows 8 elicited less than enthusiastic responses - not only because of quality issues, but also caused by design and implementation decisions that left users mystified at best. The company has now released Windows 10, slated to serve as the last Windows, with continuous updates to keep it (relatively) bug-free and addressing users' evolving requirements. But perhaps the most significant difference comes from the consolidation of the various versions that run on equipment ranging from conventional PCs to the Internet of Things (IoT). This item examines this fundamental change and what it means for the software core. Remember that for users of Windows 7 or 8, upgrading to Windows 10 remains no-charge until July.

Nope...

I'm getting an old PC, wiping it and booting it up with Linux.
I expect industry will leave Windows in droves.

I've done the same with an old PC to see if the various programmes I use will run OK.

Ububtu is nice but, I never quite liked the interface. Mint is my preferred flavor. It's based on Ubuntu but, the GUI has a very windows 7 feel to it. I am most familiar with 7 as, we still use it at work.

I just purchased a new laptop myself, the other day. 10 got wiped and Linux Mint was installed and running before the battery was even fully charged. ;-)

Out of Many Windows, 10 = 0!

A big fat Zero!

Zip.

None.

Nada.

Null.

Never.

Windows 10 still has terms and conditions that would breach most existing confidentiality clauses. That applies to industry, doctors, hospitals, lawyers, and anybody holding data covered by a data protection act. In it's present form it is unsalable to about half of it's traditional market and is an open invitation to a class action law suit, either to Microsoft directly but more likely to the software users.

Exactly what I was thinking, as well. This will be a total no go for just about anyone in, or involved with, the DOD. Additionally HIPPA compliance is going to cause considerable heartache.

I'm relatively happy with Win 7.

Windows 10 is free until July? Ha. You couldn't PAY me to switch to Windows 10.

I'll keep 7 as long as I can. My son is a software guru and extremely familiar with Mac, Win and Linux, so if I need to change I'll let him do the work to change it to whatever form of Linux works with the programs I'm running.

I switched from Win8 on my desktop computer and Win 7 on my laptop. I don't notice much difference, except that there are less crashes or locked screens. Other than Cortana sitting on the lower left of the screen, I don't see much difference - let me take that back; for a browser, I like Edge better than Explore. It seem more intuitive.

For Microsoft to say that Win 10 will be the last version doesn't make sense to me. They make a lot of money forcing people to buy a newer version - won't support the old one any longer. It doesn't sound like the Microsoft we've all come to love.
