Riding the Waves Toward More Clean Energy

Besides carrying surfers, ocean waves could carry much more of the burden of meeting the world's energy needs. So far, though, factors such as high production costs and stiff competition from other energy sources have prevented wave energy from being tapped in a meaningful way. But the U.S. Department of Energy is trying to help change that with its Wave Energy Prize program, which will hand out $2 million in prize money to developers of devices that cost-effectively capture twice as much wave energy as current technologies. Engineering360 looks at one design that converts wave energy into hydraulic energy.
