Commercial Flights Begin with Biofuels

Posted May 05, 2016 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

United Airlines has started using sustainable aviation biofuels in commercial-scale volumes, with flights between Los Angeles and San Francisco powered by a 30% renewable jet fuel/70% jet kerosene blend. The ASTM-standard fuel produced in a 35 million gal/year biofuel refinery is expected to provide a greater than 60% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared with fuel produced from conventional petroleum. The retrofitted petroleum refinery operated by AltAir Paramount in California converts sustainably sourced non-edible natural oils and agricultural wastes into jet fuel.
