Pizza Delivery By Drone Later This Year (In NZL)

Posted August 25, 2016 9:15 AM by Bayes

I was surprised to learn that Dominoes Pizza was already planning on trying out drone delivery in New Zealand later this year. It's becoming increasingly clear that in 10 years there will be a lot of deliveries made by drone. The FAA is currently working on regulations for delivery drones. Once they are done and approved, the floodgates will be opened and drone delivery will become common place.

I wonder how much UPS or FedEx has invested in the technology...or if they are just going to eventually disappear as their business models become increasingly obsolete. Obviously there is still plenty of heavy things to deliver to keep UPS and FedEx busy, even if drones are delivering lighter products. However, if Amazon were to deliver much of their smaller products by drone there is no doubt that would lead to significant layoffs at the delivery companies. Amazon has even started leasing planes for transporting products between their warehouses.

Here is the article:

Domino's planning drone pizza delivery service in New Zealand

I don't see drone delivery interfering much with the business models of the varied package delivery companies. How many pizzas will FedEx deliver today?

Perhaps places like WalMart will embrace this for in-city deliveries, and that may cut into some of the business of UPS/FedEx/DHL. I can see this being a logistical nightmare, and would likely be shelved after a series of trial runs.

I'd like to see a drone fly a pizza to my front door. We have lots of trees!

Aerial obstructions of many types, hacking, weather, time and distance...

Just a few episodes in the logistical nightmare of making this delivery platform viable.

Ah-h-h, but will that Pizza STILL be hot when it arrives after it flew through a sudden rain shower (wink, wink)?

I'm sure there are already hackers who will find a way to hijack the pizza delivery drone and divert it elsewhere. I hope crows and eagles don't like pizza. I feel drone delivery is more of a novelty that a practicality.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time that a novelty turned into a viable commercial success. But then again, it could just as well be a pet rock. I'm leaning towards the pet rock on this one. But I will admit, there are likely (certain?) to be niche applications for drone delivery.

Yeah, computer hackers live on pizza. The fun of hacking and a free meal -- too good to pass up!

I feel there are two problems with this.

1) It sounds and feels like a marketing gimmick for free advertising. The technology just isn't there in my opinion, and their reasoning is very suspect (to handle the large number of delivery calls they get they say).

2) Its Dominoes Pizza, which I consider to be the lowest end of the pizza franchise, and wouldn't eat it if it were given away free.

Don't laugh. I suspect that they'll get a lot of business just for the novelty!
