US Bridge 'Design Issue' Detected

Posted August 10, 2007 9:18 AM

From BBC News | Technology | World Edition:

US investigators have found a possible "design issue" in the bridge that gave way over the Mississippi river. The parts causing concern are the steel plates that connect girders. Federal officials have urged states to carefully consider the additional weight placed on bridges during construction or repair projects. Crews were working on the bridge when it collapsed last week, killing seven people. Divers found two more bodies on Thursday and six people are missing.

From what I've seen in the media, it appears corrosion is the primary cause of the Minneapolis's bridge structural failure. Blaming the contractors for overloading the bridge is red herring. Any first year student knows bridges are designed to safely accept loads well above their rating (sometimes as much a twenty times the rating).

The photographs of the rust swollen pins and broken links (which allow roadway expansion/contraction) are indicative of the cumulative effects of years of corrosion.

Salting winter bridge roads establishes ideal conditions for corrosion of underlying steel structures, especially jointed movable structures which have no protective lubrication or sealed bearing surfaces.

The local highway maintenance officials are responsible for assuring safe bridge maintenance practices. Corrosion in any amount indicates a lack of management oversight.

All this should have been easily seen by the inspectors, I'd love to see the report...
