Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Open Diff: My Favorite Gear

There’s a 2002 Subaru WRX wagon in my driveway. All stock – 16-inch wheels, stock turbo and intercooler, no mods to speak of beyond a K&N air filter. Even in its semi-retirement, I drive the crap out of that car: I bought it new in 2001, and to date, it’s covered 206,000 miles and counting. It’s got five forward gears that I stir myself. It has a turbocharged flat-four putting out 227 hp at 6,000 rpm, and a respectable 217 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm, pushing around 3,500-odd pounds of car (my mass included). It’s just about done with its second clutch, and nearly at the end of its second timing belt. We’ve had adventures, this wagon and I. We could tell stories, though not without self-incrimination. We’re pals. I’ll be buried in that car, I love it so. (Well, I’ll be stored in the now-virgin ashtray, at the very least.)

So, what's your favorite gear on your favorite ride? Tell us!

Interesting touch by labeling the oil type and quantity inside on the belt cover!

I drive a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. I only have 122,000 on it, or just short of that. I do not drive much more than to work, and shopping here locally, although of late, there have been more trips out to the farm (my buddy's vineyards, and our LENR project).

I thought I was having "serious" engine issue this past winter, but all it needed was an oil flush treatment, and one addition of oil system cleaner to clear that up. All cold pinging has ceased, and she runs (I have started calling her Emaline, in honor of the only huzzy to nearly trick Jed Clampett into marriage.) really really well.

Paint is almost like new, but the seat is showing a few signs of wear. May have to install a buffalo hide.

Here you go, but I think you have to sew it up yourself.

AT least it does not appear to include the buffalo hump, makes for a lumpy seat!

I'm on my 2nd Subaru Forester. Just got rid of the 1st one after 6 years, 170k miles on a 2001 2.0l & it still drove as good as ever. Replaced it with a 2007 2.5l turbo with the factory ProDrive performance upgrade. 263 bhp, makes me smile every time I drive it.

My 1992 Chev Silverado 2500, 4.3 ltr, 5 speed manual, extended cab is one I can trust most everywhere. I purchased it used with 190k on it. Took it out west with my wife & two kids and a cabover camper on it.

I haul many loads of firewood with it every year. I also haul a camper trailer to the lake and back each year.

Currently it has over 300k on it. Puffs a little smoke on startup but does not burn oil. I rarely need to add any oil.

Yes, I have worked on it - all the small stuff not unexpected after that many miles. Stuff like starter, alternator, coolant pump, radiator, brakes, clutch, etc. But the drive line is still solid.

Years ago a black bear ran into my drivers side door at highway speed at night and crushed it in. He didn't survive as he was also run over by the Crown Vic behind me.

Also had a deer run into my drivers side fender and take out the running light. The deer ran away. I have taken a raccoon or two out and maybe a possum along the way. Not even counting numerous close calls with other deer requiring slamming the brakes on.

The old saying "rusty but trusty" holds for "old red". I keep thinking I need to replace it but I kind of hate to let it go.

I used to drive a Subaru (affordable, economical, durable, some nice features, etc.) but too light for windy conditions, and, weight-wise, it felt like it was made of tinfoil...

But, I'm glad you are happy with yours...

I understand they may start importing their trucks into the U.S. as soon as next year, but we'll see when we see...
