What is a nerd, anyway?

Posted August 22, 2007 9:35 AM

From The mental_floss Blogs:

Ira Glass raised this question recently; or, perhaps, not so much raised it as lamented the way in which people retroactively confer "nerd" status upon themselves. As in, "I was such a big nerd in high school." His basic argument was: no you weren't, or: prove it. He surmised that most people filter their actual popularity, if not their seeded positions on Homecoming Court, through a sentimental lens of nerddom. "Nerds" experience pain, certainly, but just because one experienced pain in adolescence, does this make one a nerd? I do seem to hear this self diagnosis a lot from people I know, but then again, maybe that's because these are the friends of someone who does feel she was a nerd (grades 7-9: unequivocally; thereafter: equivocally). Perhaps it's just safer now to admit-or appropriate-one's nerdy past now that we're in the post-Napoleon Dynamite, Colin Meloy, Weezer, Adam Brody, Fancy Nancy, all McSweeney's endeavors, et al. era. Not to mention Judd Apatow and his latest manifesto, Superbad (eclipsing poor old Ben Greenman). I mean, Jon Cryer has Emmy nominations, John Hodgman is a superstar, and Jonathan Ames is dating Fiona Apple. Are people claiming to have been nerds so that we can infer they're destined for greatness, or because it's closure on a difficult and nebulous youth, or what?

Does that make the Late Isambard Kingdom Brunel a protonerd? What about the Late Albert Einstein?

For those who've never heard of Brunel, there's a good biography of him on CR4.

Yeh yeh...we all had teenage angst...but havn't we also all met the guy who we thought had it all only to find out once we got to know him that he was as insecure as the rest of us?

And that girl? You find out too late that she fancied you!

And everyone thought you were pretty together... you only felt like an outside ...'cos that's what everyone feels at that age.

Ok sesion over that's $150 each thanks.

I was a nerd and I am proud of it! I still went to the big parties, smoked weed and did shrooms, and messed around with girls. Maybe not EVERY day of the week, though. I feel it has more to do with you pursuing intellectual challenges as a hobby and suddenly it consumes you as you catch the bug. I was reading everything I could about how microprocessors worked, what an atom is, and almost built a laser from that one laserfaq website. Some people who don't develope the proper social skills or have mental illness may resort to these activities as a way to pass the time. But that would make them more of a misfit. So if you were a nerd in any way, be proud cuz I am sure you are happy you aren't a janitor or factory production worker; not that those are taboo jobs in a social sense.

In high school I'd rather talk to a "nerd" over a someone who was "popular" because the conversations were more interesting. Popular guys only wanted to know what I was doing after cheerleading practice, "nerdy" guys wanted to know what I was doing after graduation... those conversations meant more.

Even today I would rather talk about something thought-provoking and interesting rather that something superficial. I mean, look at my signature.

...or maybe I'm just a nerd.

The term is often applied to ones self because it sometimes implies intelligence. I think their motivation is to make people think they are smart. Maybe they really are.

I always tell my children to say "Thank You" if they are called a nerd, because usually all it means is that you are smart and wear glasses.

Well said Data,

the concept 'nerd', seems to have a very negative undertones growing up, but your idea flips it back around,.."so that means im smart? ok, am interested in a hobby? cool, will goto college and get a well paying job?" Nice!

Is a "nerd" the CEO who looted his company? Or the politician who, by example, lowers the standard of personal conduct and integrity? No? Damn; it's hard to be cool!

Looking at my last (and only...won't be going to another one- went to the 10-year one) HS reunion, those of us that were called 'nerds' are the ones who are now successful (when that metric is defined by the following: amount of salary, length of marriage, happiness in said professions & marriage, and continued enjoyment of hobbies).

IIRC, 'nerd' in HS was catch-all for those of us who did the following: any AP math/science/computer courses, chess club, astronomy club...may be more I'm not remembering. I graduated in '86, so honestly it's all a bit fuzzy.

I would not relive HS for all the tea in China. Or anywhere else.
