Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Open Diff: What’s Your Automotive Line in the Sand?

I’ll admit it: When it comes to weekend cars, I’m stuck in my ways. I prefer small to large, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive over front-wheel drive, handling over sheer horsepower, and a decent five- or six-speed gearbox over an automatic transmission. In fact, while not being a deal-killer for a daily driver, an automatic transmission is a line in the sand for me when it comes to weekend cars.

I’ve gone to great lengths defending modern performance automatics in cars like the Dodge Hellcat and the Nissan GT-R, but neither of those options are remotely in my budget for a weekend car and occasional track toy. For cars that I can (or might be able to) afford, the first thing I’ll look for is three pedals and a stick shift; if they’re absent, the search continues.

My left leg still works. When it comes to an automobile for play or work, I want my left leg to do something too.

(True, I appreciate a mush box for backing a 32 foot travel trailer uphill into a tight spot. )

I too prefer to stir the gearbox!

Insurance companies should give you a discount...

These days my weekend driver usually has a 3 across bench seat and 8 foot bed plus a 5.3L V8 and 4 wheel drive.

When the budget opens up, for fun it will be 3 pedals, light weight, rear wheel drive.

When I went to purchase my ( then new ) F150, I was told they aren't made with a manual gearbox. I wanted to order one and was told I could only get an automatic transmission. When did we get so lazy that we don't want the experience of the full driving experience?

Cheers!

Enjoy it while you can. I can see the day coming when we can't legally drive on the public roads. It'll all be autonomous. (I hope I'm wrong.)

We may very well live in the golden age!

Then they wouldn't be public roads any more.

It will be just like waiting for the subway or bus. Except it is a much smaller, private bus.

I hope to never see that day.

If vehicles will eventually become totally autonomous, there is no need for all that bulky sheet metal surrounding the occupant.Collisions will never happen,so the vehicles can be light weight, and designed for the individual occupant. No need to tell it where to go, a thought will suffice.Vehicles will be charged on-the-fly with embedded transformers in the roadway, and possibly capacitor powered, since range would be no problem. It will require massive infrastructure changes and construction,as well as an immense amount of electrical generating capacity, possibly fusion from H3,mined from the moon.We old timers will pass away into the distant past, and the newer generations will never know the thrill of connecting with the road through a great shifting gearbox and a high revving engine and a taking a curvy road, riding on the edge of control around every turn. Our current transportation methods will seem as archaic to them as riding a camel or elephant today.Every generation gains something and loses something in the process.

We may be the last to experience the adrenaline surge of a car well designed and well driven.
