Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Periodic Reminder: 4-4-2 Stood for Many Things Over the Years

As we recently discussed, it’s fairly easy for the general public and auto enthusiasts alike to get confused about automotive nomenclature. Matters are often made worse when marketing departments forget to check their own references, or plan for the future, and thus sow a lot of that confusion themselves, as is the case with the Oldsmobile 4-4-2.

The problem with Oldsmobile’s approach to the 4-4-2 didn’t arise from too little communication, as was the case with the Iron Duke, a term that Pontiac only appeared to use once in its marketing efforts. Instead, Oldsmobile’s people kept redefining the term over a period of more than 35 years to chase product changes, leading to no less than five different interpretations of 4-4-2.

Get the 411 on the 4-4-2.

That's an interesting train. Looks like the front is hinged and opens. Also, the gauge looks narrow. And the smoke stack is small too.

As I remember it it was a Cutlass with the option package that became popular, so they just named it that...4-speed, 4-barrel, 2-bucket seats....because that's what everybody was asking for....Then everybody was changing the shifters out with Hurst, which I did in my Chevelle SS as well, so they came out with the Hurst version....

Chevelle SS with a 396?

I had a friend who put a 427 Rat motor in his 1969 Chevelle SS.

The GM lineup: Pontiac LeMans/GTO, Buick Skylark/GS, Olds Cutlass/442 and Chevy Chevelle/SS.

Some believe one of the 4's was for 400 ci or 455 ci = size of motor, since some 442's came with an automatic.

Some say the 2 = dual exhaust

Who is right???

At the time I finished grad school, I remember seeing these "new" 442's I think it was for 4 = Quad 4 motor, 4 = 4 speed automatic and 2 = dual exhaust. GM sure destroyed a classic name!
