Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

How Did You Start Your Muscle Car Life?

Full disclosure: your author harbors a slight fever for Henry Js. I'll stop whenever I see one. And I actually own a stocker with some mid-Fifties hot rod plans for it (shhhh...don't tell my dad). And I tell you that, because the go-kart was the second thing I noticed. But that got me to thinking: This photo is actually of a future muscle car owner. Or, at least it's a high probability.

Of course, we've asked this question before, but what got you into muscle cars? Was it a particularly fast go-kart that you won a few sidewalk races in? Was it a model kit you built? Was it an older sibling who had one, first? Maybe your mom drag raced competitively? Maybe your dad owned a garage and sponsored a race car? We never get tired of hearing these stories. So, light up the comments section like a roman candle and we'll pop the popcorn!

Reminds me more of River Phoenix in Stand By Me. Can you believe that movie is 35 years old! One of my favorite movies!

I don't remember the Spitfire, but I love the Two Tone Saddle - must've added 5 mph to the top speed!

I do remember the Stingray and all the cool bikes by Schwinn, Orange Krate, Apple Krate, yellow, green and the Grey Ghost - they had the shifter (ball breaker), front drum brake, rear rim brake, front suspension, shocks on the rear seat and small front wheel with wide slick rear! And all had the cool racing stripes on the banana seat!

I had a blue Spitfire, fastest bike on the block....really cool name too, Spitfire!

My next bike, a red 3 speed English racer....more of a classy ride, but I could barely reach the pedals....haha

I loved watching NASCAR races (back then I called them Stock Cars) on TV. Richard Petty in his blue #43, the Allison brothers, David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Buddy Baker, AJ Foyt ... Yup, Petty was my favorite, but the others were super cool too!

When someone asked me what I want to be when I grow up, I said a race car driver!
