World's Tallest Building is in Dubai!

Posted September 11, 2007 1:00 AM

The middle eastern gulf state of Dubai is fast becoming the world's premier innovative building and construction showcase for cutting-edge, high-rise commercial architecture. Nothing speaks more to this trend than the still unfinished 141 story-and-growing Burj Dubai building. At 512 m (1,680 ft), the building is now taller than the previous world record holder, Taiwan's Taipei, which measures in at 508 m (1,667 ft). When completed, the commercial tower will scrape the sky at an amazing 693 m (2,275 ft).

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Building & Construction, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Building & Construction today.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the Taipei Tower constructors used bamboo for their scaffolding.

CR3, I believe that is correct. Even on the most recent construction, you still see bamboo scaffolding, but not always. (I was just there a month ago). Many of these people actually go through 4 years of schooling, believe it or not, before they are allowed to be a bamboo scaffold aficianado.

I like to sit in my hotel in the early morning and watch these guys race up the outside of the scaffold to a height of 30 floors or more. Why? According to a local source in Taipei, he said it is because it is too slow to wait in line for the elevators and it is much quicker to go up the outside of the scaffold than try to do it on the inside...especially if you are late for work.

Amazing.

Dubai is already up there as the leading building site (following Shanghai). Abu Dhabi and some of the Saudi economic cities are trying to catch up with Dubai construction but it will be hard.
