EU to Block Bomb-making Websites

Posted September 24, 2007 11:18 AM

From The Globe and Mail - Technology News:

A European Union proposal to stop people from accessing bomb-making instructions online is fraught with technical difficulties, if not downright unworkable, Internet practitioners say. EU Justice and Security Commissioner Franco Frattini says he is working on plans that would block Web searches for bomb recipes and oblige Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to prevent access to sites containing them. At present, crude bomb-making guides are readily available. "I do intend to carry out a clear exploring exercise with the private sector...on how it is possible to use technology to prevent people from using or searching dangerous words like bomb, kill, genocide or terrorism," Frattini told Reuters in an interview earlier this month. Frattini is expected to present his proposals in the next few weeks as part of a package of anti-terrorism measures. They are likely to spur fierce debate over feasibility and cost. Some in the Internet industry are adamant that such ideas are doomed to fail.

As a citizen of the UK I can understand the need to curtail would be bombers and suicide martyr's, but I always thought and would fight to the death the right of every person to be able to obtain education, be it in the classroom, library or the internet! In anycase one can obtain the knowlege of bombs and bomb making via books in the libraries around the world and in a lot of schools and universities. I read my way to making all sorts of explosives and even how to build a rudimentry nuclear bomb, but I would never dream of using such a device unless it was in the cause of defending my country! Spencer.

You should see some of the technical data that's available, mostly in university libraries, re the properties, critical size, reactivity etc of plutonium, etc.

Designs for atomic weapons are very common on the web (one even appeared in our University newspaper many years ago). The thing is it takes more than a basic design to build an atomic device (very expensive and specialised equipment, precision engineering, etc). Dirty bombs are a little different, but fortunately the main materials to make these and the refined materials to make a high yield bomb are controlled.

I would like to think that if you are smart enough to build an atomic bomb, then you are smart enough to know not to use it.

I don't quite know how this would be played out. Sure it SOUNDS like a good idea but would it really help, after all the information is basically common knowledge to begin with and if you are really determined (ie- a terrorist or a nutter) this won't stop you (hell, you can do more damage with a gun than a homemade IED). Do we really want another AOL restricted access web network!

I say, lets put MORE information on the web regarding bomb making. For example making a dirty bomb using the radioactive material out of smoke detectors, or Ricen nerve gas out of caster bean seeds!

The promise of an easy to obtain powerful weapon with incredible potential to kill (which is in fact a complete crock that will never work). Sounds dumb, but remember it works with free energy devices on the web. Easy to track down the bad people then (look for the person trying to buy 100,000 smoke detectors). Don't think it will work, need more, how about having government sites like the FBI saying that it doesn't work and you should not even bother trying it and if you do you will be thrown in jail for the rest of your life.

Besides, if they should be looking at anything to ban on the internet it should be information on how to start up a home drug lab. "P" is becoming a real bastard of a problem down here. Of course it still won't help, information can just as easily be posted in the mail or exchanged at the next drub manufactures social party.

For anyone in doubt as to the feasibility of blocking key words on the internet, try putting the following proposed key words into google and see what pops up.

"bomb"

"kill"

"genocide"

"terrorism"

MOST of the found results have absolutely NOTHING to do with terrorism, and many of the rest that do, relate to news sites and articles reporting it!

A case of politicians who could not find their arse with both hands trying to make uninformed decisions on technology they don't even understand.

(wow, this article really has pushed my button this morning)

One of the reasons that I do not like this idea at all is that I live in the UK, where when they start to ban things they tend to carry on banning even more things. We are are living in a big-brother society where we are not allowed to tell so-called racist jokes when often as not the jokes were started by the ethnic community themselves. Where we cannot move without making a risk assessment, and political correctness is the norm. Children are not allowed to play conkers unless they have protective glasses, they are barred from climbing trees and there must be an adult to every child who is at the swimming baths, I pity those parents who have three children. We as citizens should rise up and stop meddleing politicians from taking the fun in our lives away. Spencer.
