The Ethics of Packaging

Posted September 25, 2007 11:43 AM by Sharkles

In the minds of many consumers, concerns about environmental and ethical values are closely related. Excessive packaging and the problems caused by non-biodegradable materials have received much attention recently, but companies are now discovering the public is equally concerned about the ethics of packaging. In one survey, the overwhelming majority (94%) said they want packagers to make more effort to show what social, environmental, and fair trade activities they are engaged in. Having state-of-the-art packaging equipment isn't enough; they want to be sure manufacturers are also improving working conditions for their employees.

I must be in the 6%. To show more effort? What does that mean? Social? Fair trade? Huh? Most people like to see environmental, but the other attributes for packaging? Oh, puleeeeeeze. I rather suspect that the architects of this survey worded it such that if the respondant answered affirmatively to any of the three attributes they went into the "YES" column. OR'ing the results to distort, spin, skew the statistics into their agenda.

What I want to see in packaging is packing material that does not require me to use really sharp tools to open and risk eviscerating myself in the process trying to cut through this really tough, thick plastic. Ugh.

How "many" consumers? Consumers consume and most wouldn't recognise an ethical value if it bit them. They want to read soothing comments on packages that make them feel better about themselves without actually having to go to the trouble of taking a good look at the world around them.
