Propellers are Back in Business

Posted September 25, 2007 11:43 AM

Six-bladed turboprop aircraft like the Bombardier Q400 illustrate why: More efficient fuel burn, reduced cabin noise, and greater speed — jet fast in fact — compared to previous-generation propeller planes. Orders for the Q400 are double last year's number and continue to grow.

The Russians have known this for years, their bombers "Bear and Bison" have been using this technology for the past 45 years! Spencer.

all true, but pilots want to fly stove-pipes (jets) cause all jets must have redundant systems and much better handling characteristics -and are easier overall. AND, airlines are upgrading all their short haul stuff to jet and heavily selling the improved speed, safety, comfort, etc. I doubt if they will soon change their tune---unless economics become overwhelming.

Hi Keith, 65% of internal flights here in the UK are by aircraft using turbo-prop engines, these are deemed the most reliable, safe and economic. Also they can be used on much shorter runways and land on the beeches in the smaller Hebridean Islands and other beach locations. It is probably different in the USA as it is such a large country. Spencer.
