A class of nanomachines with semiconductor capabilities can be manipulated with a single electron or a single protein molecule, say University of Wisconsin-Madison engineers. Using an ion beam implanter, the group doped silicon nanomachines with gallium, eliminating the need for the structures to include conductors and, therefore, reducing their weight. Applications include sensors, photovoltaics, and mechanically tunable transistors.
