In fact, 70% of adults polled said they have heard little or nothing about nano, this at a time when the market features some 500 nanotechnology-enabled consumer products. Of course, the general public probably has little awareness of emulsifiers and binding agents, even though they show up in everything from face cream to food. The risk is that a false alarm about nanotechnology could have those same blissful consumers turning in a heartbeat. Tellingly, when the 42% who knew nothing about nanotechnology were read a short risk/benefit statement about it, 31% decided the risks would outweigh the benefits.
