Power From Space? Pentagon Likes The Idea

Posted October 15, 2007 8:08 AM

From MSNBC.com: Space News:

A new Pentagon study lays out the roadmap for a multibillion-dollar push to the final frontier of energy: a satellite system that collects gigawatts’ worth of solar power and beams it down to Earth. The military itself could become the "anchor tenant" for such a power source, due to the current high cost of fueling combat operations abroad, the study says. The 75-page report, released Wednesday, says new economic incentives would have to be put in place to "close the business case" for space-based solar power systems — but it suggests that the technology could be tested in orbit by as early as 2012. "I think we have found the killer application that we have been looking for to tie everything together that we're doing in space," Air Force Col. Michael V. "Coyote" Smith, who initiated the study for the Defense Department's National Security Space Office, told msnbc.com on Thursday.

Have you noticed that they are soo soo soo used to spending Billions of our dollars to do these things? That same system can now be used as another weapon in more than one way. We are getting plenty enough sun down here that is wasted so why in the world do we need to go chasing up there for more of it? I mean if you fly over the "National Forrest's" covering New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and similar locals, you will find the rocks pretty much dominate those places.

Why not just put the banks and banks of Solar collectors on all of that pristine sunny real-estate?

Guest is correct here. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. How about let's keep it simple stupid.

Why do you guys got to be such a buzz kill? I mean, if Dr. Evil, uh, I mean the Pentagon, wants frickin' killer death ray laser beams in space, let them have frickin' killer death ray laser beams in space.

Then the Chinese will be kept busy working on more rockets to destroy them in orbit.

And lets not forget the Russians. They already have their knickers in a bunch over missile defense shields, so I'm sure they will love this new opportunity to rattle their sabres, or whatever it is they rattle nowadays.

You see where I'm going with this? We get the military types to take the conflicts into outer space, leaving the planet surface relatively quiet.

This leaves us engineering types to revitalize the bomb shelter industry, not for missile attacks, but for all the new space crap raining down when its orbit decays.

Make that mirrorized bomb shelters, just in case.

Good times.

Hi Munky, So, you do not remember your President JFK getting his knickers in a twist when Cuba decided to import ballistic misiles from Russia into Cuba? I do not blame the Russians, they have enough problems as it is without you gung-ho Yanks stoking the fires. Get a life man. Spencer.

Hey Spencer,

First off, please take note of the little flag under my avatar. It is a Canadian flag, not American. Canadian ≠ gung-ho Yank (or any other type of Yank for that matter).

Secondly, in the name of all things Holy, how can you possibly see my post as anything other than sarcasm? Blatant, obvious, and heavy-handed sarcasm at that.

Please poke your head out from your cubicle once in a while, I fear you are losing perspective.

Hi Munky, I'm fine thankyou, it's just that whenever something or somebody comes up with an idea like sun-power from space the pentagon has got to put it's oar in. I am just totally fed up with people who endevour to put to use something that can help the population towards making a weapon out of it. Spencer.
