Ecotality Lends Hydrogen Tech To Clean Coal Project

Posted October 18, 2007 8:12 AM

From CNET News.com:

Ecotality is lending its hydrogen technology expertise to a municipal electricity project that aims to squeeze natural gas from coal without emitting carbon dioxide. The company is partnering with the Arizona Public Service public utility company, which received $8.9 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy for its Advanced Hydrogasification Project (AHP), according to Ecotality. Hydrogasification is a process in which natural gas is made from coal without releasing the pollutant carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. For the AHP project, Ecotality will contribute its so-called Hydrality technology, a process it developed in conjunction with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory that produces hydrogen from magnesium pellets and water, with water as the only byproduct. The company has previously used the Hydrality process as an inboard source of power for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Gee, if they squeeze methane (natural gas) out of coal without releasing the carbon, can we get the energy out of the methane without releasing the carbon? Or, will we even get the same amount of energy out for eack kg of coal?

Plus, none of the links referred to a coal gasification process, so unles it's something other than steam/coke which then includes lots of really nasty monoxycarbon.

Gee, I can make chemistry sound spectacular, too, if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Gee, the must have a mine full of MgH2 to be able to use it for a fuel source. And what does any of that have to do with the coal, other than using the H to make methane so that the carbon can be released wherever the coal generated gas is used. Won't really save much, will it? And people buy this. They'll make millions deciding that maybe it wasn't such a good idea arter all.
