Blindsided: Hybrids Too Quiet

Posted October 19, 2007 8:16 AM

Environmentally friendly hybrid cars promise a brighter future by lowering harmful emissions, but pose a darker threat for some non-driving citizens, the blind. Electric motors reduce the vehicle sound level so much that test subjects were unable to detect the vehicles. An audio alert device might solve the problem and create a new one of noisy cars.

This could start a whole new industry! Ring tones are a big business for cell phones now we can have "Car Tones"! I can't wait. I think I'll move far out into the country.

Whistle tips are the answer! Time to give Bubb Rubb a call (video).

Lolly stick clattering on the spokes of your bicycle.... footie down the rec' ,piles of sweaters for goal posts.. Kissing the Girl Guides who used to stay in the village hall...

happy days...

I know the problem well... I have a two-person electric car and I must be really careful because pedestrians cannot hear the approaching car.

It is a Hungarian car called Puli. They don't make it anymore.

Installing 100MW... I will be the one who won't hear anything after getting out of that car.

Hi Del,

Originally it was made in 1993. It has a 60V/7.3 kW DC motor with a variable frequency chopper and a two-stage field weakening. Its range is about 50 miles and the highest speed is about 45 mph. The batteries are 10 pcs 6V/240 Ah lead-acid for the traction system an one 12V/40Ah lead-acid for the normal car electrics.

ON my electric golf cart. as well as electric cars. the key safety device in the car is the driver. so if he or she is paying attention to their driving they will notice a blind person with a white cane or handling a service dog. the device in the car is called the horn.

the 2nd part would also re-train service dogs and disabled people to be aware of the horn.

Honk at a blind person and you are subject to have a dent in your hood to match their blind stick. Guide dogs are trained not to step out into traffic if a car is coming. That doesn't help when the dog or just a blind person steps off the curb and some idiot pulls around the corner without seeing them. The responsability still must be laid on the driver to be carefull not to run over pedestrains sighted or not. This response comes from the spouce of a blind person.

i just googled "deer whistles" and saw two sites Sav-A-Life.com & Deeralert.com they have a whistle that mounts to the front of the car

i've only seen pictures of it i don't know if it will work for you- if people will be able to hear it (like dog whistles that people can't hear)

the people at 'blind institutions/organizations' might know of something

good luck

More annoying noises, great

maybe a common sense approach, speed dependant beeper about 10% of the volume of a backup alarm from a garbage truck.

or how bout sonar for white canes.

i just googled "deer whistles" and saw two sites Sav-A-Life.com & Deeralert.com that sell these small air whistles that attach to the front of the car

as air flows thru it, it whistles

i've only seen it in pictures, make sure people can hear it (and it's not like dog whistles that can't be heard by people)

good luck

Most problems are going to occur @ low speeds, not many blind people trying to cross freeways.
