Researchers Knocks Out HIV

Posted October 20, 2007 12:03 PM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

With the latest advances in treatment, doctors have discovered that they can successfully neutralize the HIV virus. The so-called 'combination therapy' prevents the HIV virus from mutating and spreading, allowing patients to rebuild their immune system to the same levels as the rest of the population. To date, it represents the most significant treatment for patients suffering from HIV, according to recent research. Professor Jens Lundgren from the University of Copenhagen, together with other members of the research group EuroSIDA, have conducted a study, which demonstrates that the immune system of all HIV-infected patients can be restored and normalised. The only stipulation is that patients begin and continue to follow their course of treatment.

Given that HIV is the precursor to AIDS, the largest current epidemic on the planet, this is great news. However, it doesn't solve the problem of HIV transmission. Making HIV carriers healthy enough to perhaps fight off AIDS is one thing, but preventing the continued expansion of the disease is another.

You are right there. Unfortunately, HIV transmission is largely due to lifestyle choices such as the sharing of contaminated needles by drug addicts, or through unprotected sex.

The real problem here isn't so much finding a cure for the disease, but educating people to take personal responsibility for themselves & the consequences of their lifestyle choices. I'm not saying people shouldn't do these things: there are always people who are stupid enough to do something they shouldn't. Rather, if you want to engage in free sex, practise safe sex. If you want to use IV drugs, don't share needles. Do whatever you want, but take all necessary precautions before you do it.
