Battery pack upgrade for Prius claims 150MPG

Posted October 21, 2007 2:23 PM

From Engadget:

Filed under: Transportation Being shown at the Clean Vehicle Technology Expo in Ontario, California is Hymotion's modified Prius that can hit up to 150MPG in city areas. By adding a 175 pound battery pack to the trunk of a Prius -- which fits conveniently under the floor panel -- and charging overnight using a regular power plug, owners will be able to drive for up to 50 miles on battery power alone: that's well over the average motorist's daily journey. It'll cost $9,500 including installation, but according to one of the staff at the show, half of that could be covered by rebates as part of a new electric cars bill soon to be before Congress. Onwards we go, tip toeing towards a petrol-free future.[Thanks, I LOVE THE CAPS LOCK KEY] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Relating this to MPG is totally bogus, given that it is plugged into the power grid. Reminds me of the story, way back when foreign cars in the US were rare. A guy bought a VW and was bragging to his coworkers about his gas mileage. A couple of his friends started adding gasoline to his tank in the middle of the night. His mileage kept getting better and better. One day they quit, and he had it into the dealer to see what was wrong.

agree that it's a bogus solution - if you take power from the grid, then you will be using the most marginal generators - just maybe wind, but more likely keeping old coal fired stations going so the net environmental effect is worse than gasoline, and the overall system efficiency is going to be bad...

Wrong! Think of all the energy it takes to refine then deliver your gasoline to the pump. Generating electricity and then using it in a car is much more efficient. So what you're saying is it is much better to have millions of cars each generating its own pollution in cars which are probably not tuned correctly anyway thus spewing out more pollution is better? How clueless. Plus there ARE actual clean coal burning power plants with zero emissions (except for CO2). But even then the CO2 output is wayyy lower than your average poorly tuned car.

Me too. Headline shell games. Energy is energy and it had to come from somewhere. I guess if we had more nukes we'd have less global warming. Now, there is an inconvenient truth !!

www.youtube.com also mentions mounting solar panels to prius , that is a better solution ,you don`t burn that extra coal
