Turn Brown to Green

Posted November 08, 2007 8:57 AM

There's money to be made in some abandoned, environmentally challenged industrial properties. Many brownfields nationwide are being redeveloped into economically viable industrial parks, airports, or urban residences. Successful remediation rests on ideal market location, contained contamination, and a cooperative local community.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Environmental Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Environmental Technology today.

There's also some potential liability. Just ask the folks at Ravel Technology.

I think they will have major problems:

IN Los Angeles CA they built a 30 Million dollar High school over and industrial waste site. The local Gov inspected it and was ready to put it into use.

A local Teenager and her crew tested the site and found that just being there caused Cancer.

The end result is that with (Remediation Efforts) The school will be placed into use. If I was a parent in that neighborhood, I would move.

"The local Gov inspected it and was ready to put it into use."

sounds like there was something else going on, any of these local officials own a stake in the redevelopment.........

Is it environmentally challenged or abandoned by these industries themselves to move to greener pastures , whose going to clean up , toxic hazards will be beared by residents anyway

Yes, there is. A few towns away from me lots of very old industrial buildings were torn down. For years the ground was showing all the color of the rainbow, but no life, from the chemicals. Finally the city allowed warehousing and truck, tractor trailer storage. The warehouses are elevated to be level with the trucks platform, and all around is blacktop for parking and roads. The chemicals are sealed in the ground, the rainwater kept out -good. A few extra precaution, like venting the foundation to the outside, and you have a win - win situation (especially compared with what was there before).
